Aloha Festivals: Nā Mele ʻUkulele

A Partnership with KHON2

Aloha Festivals has cancelled its 2020 main events due to the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For 2020, the festival has partnered with KHON2 to produce and air Aloha Festivals: Nā Mele ‘Ukulele, a half-hour special celebrating the legacy of Aloha Festivals including its cultural traditions and performances from local artists:

KHON2 will include the Aloha Festivals theme in its original programming, including “Aloha Authentic,” “Modern Wahine Hawaii” and “Sam Choy’s in the Kitchen” throughout the month of September. For a list of these episodes, see below:

Aloha Authentic

Aloha Authentic is a show that shares knowledge and experiences of Hawaiʻi, Hawaiian culture and showcases local lifestyle.

Kamaka Pili, host of Aloha Authentic shares stories from Shirley Brenner, past Pa’u Queen for Aloha Festivals; Monte McComber, cultural director of Royal Hawaiian Center; and Roy Sakuma, founder of Ukulele Festival Hawaiʻi.

Modern Wahine Hawaii

Modern Wahine Hawaii focuses on women in and around the Pacific and their stories.

Host Brook Lee shares stories from ʻIolani, Natalie and Macey Kamauʻu, members of the Aloha Festivals Royal Court; Antoinette Lee, chairwoman of the Aloha Festivals Floral Parade; and Pōmaikaʻi Lyman, musician and featured ‘ukulele artist in Aloha Festivals: Nā Mele ‘Ukulele.

Sam Choy’s in the Kitchen

Chef Sam Choy shows how to prepare unique and tasty meals with the items most commonly found in your kitchens. 

Chef Sam Choy visits Makana McClellan, member of Aloha Festivals Board of Directors, in her home in Wai’anae. Makana shares what makes Aloha Festivals special to her and her family and Chef Sam Choy makes a bowl of authentic island poke.
